Southwest Virginia Workforce Investment Area One is located in the beautiful coalfields of the Appalachian mountains of Southwest Virginia. Area One includes seven counties and one city. Although it is a predominately rural area, there is significant industrial development and business presence.
The Southwest Virginia Workforce Investment Board is made up of community leaders appointed by the Chief Local Elected Officials of Lee, Scott, Wise, Russell, Dickenson, Tazewell, and Buchanan Counties and the City of Norton. The Chief Local Elected Officials
appoint individuals with policy-making authority in their respective organizations to serve on this Board, reflecting recognition that workforce development is a top priority and is key to the long-range economic vitality of the area.
The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (H.R. 1385) rewrites pre-existing federal statutes governing programs of job training, adult education and literacy, and vocational rehabilitation, replacing them with streamlined and more flexible components of an integrated workforce development system.
